Conclusion

Overall i have really enjoyed this first project. I feel my practical and theoretical skills have grown and developed throughout this semester. As having no previous hair experience i am happy in my progression in this area particularly. I feel i have used various resources for research and pleased with my designs development over the weeks. In future i aim to widen my research even more though. I was really happy with the final outcome for my design and the outcome of my partners design that i created.
Looking back now at my design i feel the make up needed to be a bit more extreme to show better in the photographs, and too experiment with other textures and perhaps lashes. I was really happy with how my hair design turned out and am glad my skills and potential was pushed further by my tutor as i feel a lot more confident now.

Inspiration.

After speaking with my tutor this week about finding inspiration and more visual references from my own life, I have already started looking differently at what’s around me. I think it’s important to try to unpack my daily activities and personal interests, in order to investigate what I find inspiring. Rather than just using the internet as my only source of research, I am excited to start exploring the things that sub-consciously influence my practice. I will attempt to do this by documenting what catches my eye through photography and blogging.

Today I assisted my sister with a Christmas stall for a BA Fine Art degree show fundraiser in the main building. I really took interest in an image of Frida Kahlo that was designed for a Christmas card. I like the simplicity of the monochromatic palette chosen to depict her features. I was particularly drawn to what appeared to be a floral crown, which I feel ties in with the Elizabethans, with their use of embellishments and hair accessories. This has made me think of other ways which the Elizabethan Era could be interpreted and contemporised.

Over the Christmas period I intend on watching a couple of films that I think will inspire my creativity. Two of these will be, Black Swan and Anna Karenina, both of which include a lot of stage make up design.

Next semester I will continue to pay specific attention to what it is exactly that inspires me and hope that this more varied documentation will feed into my practice.

Outcome of final assessment (My design.)

These are the images from the outcome of my design that my partner Millie created from the final assessment. I am really pleased with the result.

My partners practice of my design.

Today Millie practised my design on me. I feel the practice went really well and came out how i wanted. Millie took on board everything i said and instructed. My hair is very difficult to work with as i have Alopecia and she did well creating my design around this. I brought extensions with me incase my hair needed to be thicker but didn't use them in the end. Here is her outcome:

We are going to meet up and practice further, so the design really comes out right on the timed assessment. The only thing i would need to tell Millie is too make sure the beads are a little more symmetric but will practice again.

Step by steps to my design.

Hair Step by Steps.

Equipment needed:

• Pintail comb.
• Curby grips.
• Brush.
• Hair spray.
• Pearl accessories.
• Props. (All provided.)

1. Section hair into middle parting.
2. Section hair and create a plait to secure padding onto behind the ear
3. Place padding in, using curby grips.
4. Backcomb hair.
5. Section hair starting from the bottom and start to cover round the prop.
6. Take bottom section a wrap from back to right round the front and grip.
7. Take small sections working your way up grip around prop.
8. Make sure hair goes downwards so bald patches in my hair don’t show and the whole structure is quite low.
9. Leave top section to last to cover up neatly the hair underneath.
10. Ensure all secure with grips. And grips are hidden.
11. Do same on other side. 

Accessories:

Place the accessories provided running along the back of the structure. Make sure it is symmetrical.

My final experiments for my design.

After experimenting previously with props and padding to create my look i realised i had definitely lost the shape i was aiming to create to begin with. So i created different padding. I cut a sponge into a triangle shape and then covered with tights. I will the place the prop lower and wrap the hair around creating a shape that goes outwards like my original contemporary image.
I experimented on myself, but found it quite tricky as the props were big and hard to work with on myself. I realised it was achievable though and worked out how it could be done to explain to my partner. I bought some hair extensions just incase as my hair is very thin on one side and i didnt know whether i would need to add some to cover the prop.

This is definitely more like the shape and structure i was hoping to be able to create. But as i said before i struggled gripping the padding in and creating it on myself, but i know how it can be done to come out with my better results.

Also i have chosen for my final assessment just to use the individual pearls running across the top and not the the hair vine like in previous trials. As i feel it would be too much with both now i have achieved the shape i want.

Evaluation of my final timed assessment.

Overall i feel my final outcome of my partner Millie's design came out really well. I feel that i took her direction of how to create the look all on board and did the best i could in creating this during the hour and a half that we had. At first when Millie showed me her design, i was worried that it wasn't going to be achievable. There were lots of different components, e.g. head band, the french plait at the back, props in the sides etc. However Millie was excellent at explaining at how the look would be done, step by step, and was very precise at how she envisaged it too look. After talking through will Millie i felt a lot more confident that i would be able to create it. As she would make the head band and by a clip in fringe for the front section. At first i was worried mainly about the french plait that would go in a circle at the back, having only just learnt it at uni in previous weeks, but with lots of practice and practice on Millie i was really happy with the outcome in the final assessment. The overall look i was really pleased with and i feel Millie was happy with the outcome too. She communicated her ideas really well to me, and i feel this is a main aspect as to why the look came out just as she planned. I was pleased with the make up application, the wool on the brows went particularly well and i had a nice even coverage on the base. However i still feel i could have gone heavier with the blush so it showed in the photographs more. My time management during the assessment was good, i finished the look 15 minutes early which gave me time to go over things and make sure everything was exactly right. To conclude i was really pleased on a whole with the assessment, managing to create well even the things i was concerned about. I am glad my practical skills were pushed as it has made me a lot more confident now.

Powerpoint presentation feedback.

Feedback from presentation:

I feel the powerpoint went well. However, I definitely struggle with talking in front of people and get very nervous but it is something i aim to improve and work on in the duration of this course. I feel my actual powerpoint was good and laid out well but i could have done better in talking and explaining things to my class. I now need to create the shape on both sides like the one in my first experiment. I will try to do this with placing the padding lower. I have also bought a sponge to wrap in tights as i can cut that too the right shape. 

Hair practical week 8.

Hair Practical week 8.

This week I was practicing my partner’s design for a contemporary hair look.

I had to firstly, section the head to just in front of the ears. Then take the section on the back of the head and create a French plait going round in a circle. I then had too use the hair left on the front and put in middle parting and crimp both sides. Then make small plait on the head to attach the prop too. (On both sides.) I then added the prop low down close to the ear as directed and wrapped remaining hair on the front around it. My partner’s look had a headpiece which then will be added. Also for the timed assessments next week I will also be adding a clip on fringe as part of her design.

So then decided the take the French plait all the way round the back of the head like this.

Overall I think the practice went well. My timing was over, however for the timed assessment I will crimp the hair before hand so that should help improve my time.
